Today we celebrate the feast of Santo Cristo del Tesoro. The 16th century black image of Santo Cristo is currently venerated at the Santo Cristo del Tesoro Chapel inside Santa Isabel College at Taft Avenue, Manila.
Attending this fiesta wasn’t really part of my plans. After visiting my grandparents in Ongpin, I went straight to Quiapo to buy some stuff. After checking my Facebook, I saw a post about the Santo Cristo Fiesta of college. Since I’m quite near to Taft Avenue, I didn’t want to waste the opportunity to see and touch the image. And so, I went straight to Santa Isabel College and waited for the fiesta to culminate.
Arrived at around 1:30pm and waited for a couple of hours for the pre fiesta mass. Around 3:30pm the chapel was already full with students (mostly young lads). There were also a handful of civilians which I presumed to be alumni of the college. I felt really high school spirits. I overheard people talking about their batches and teachers. Some oldies were even talking how the fiesta was before. The most dramatic part was when musicians from the conservatory of music of the college started playing. Live classical music and choir gave me goosebumps! It rained quite hard during the mass, but when the mass was about to end, the rain slowly subsided. Right before the mass ended, the Santo Cristo del Tesoro was brought down from the altar and mounted on His carozza.
This was indeed a very nice birthday present to me!
