The centuries old image of the Virgen was brought to the Philippines from Zaragosa, Spain during the mid 1600’s. The image was carved from hard wood and later was covered in hammered silver while the heads and hands were changed to precious ivory. Sadly, the ivory hands of the Virgen were either stolen or destroyed during the war. The image of Del Pilar de Manila is also a survivor of the war in 1945.
The route of the procession was quite long and tiring. One unique practice in the Del Pilar de Manila fiesta is that the Virgen is welcomed with firecrackers and loud fire truck sirens. I included in this entry a short video of the welcoming.
Happy Fiesta La Pilar de Manila!
