A Canonical Coronation is a coronation approved by a bull from the Pope to crown a particular venerated image by his representative if not himself. It is the highest honor or recognition given to a particular image of great devotion.
As of this writing, there are 33 canonically crowned Marian images in the Philippines. One of the images is Nuestra Señora delos Remedios de Pampanga which was crowned in 1956.
Every year, the Kapampamngans celebrate the anniversary of the Canonical Coronation of their patroness thru a reenactment. The event usually start with a mass and a procession after.
This year the reenactment took place at San Fernado, Pampanga. The image of the Virgen with Santo Cristo del Perdon were processioned from the San Fernando Cathedral to an open field at Villa del Sol. It was my first time to attend the event and I was amazed with the number of devotees who attended. One can hardly move when stuck in the crowd.
The experience was really tiring, but rewarding at the same time.
VIVA VIRGEN DELOS REMEDIOS! VIVA SANTO CRISTO DEL PERDON!
